TNPA invests R375m in Richards Bay port road upgrades

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has initiated a R375 million rehabilitation programme to upgrade key arterial road infrastructure at the Port of Richards Bay.

The capital outlay forms part of TNPA’s infrastructure renewal strategy to expand cargo handling capacity and enhance operational efficiency.

Underlining the economic focus of the capital programme, Richards Bay port manager Winnie Mpanza stated: “This investment demonstrates TNPA’s commitment to develop and maintain world-class port infrastructure that enables economic trade.”

Rehabilitation of freight routes

The capital works target three primary transport routes inside the port precinct: Urania Road, Newark Road, and Ventura Road.

These corridors serve as the central transit arteries linking incoming road traffic to the port’s major commercial terminals and handling facilities. In recent years, an influx of heavy vehicle logistics traffic has accelerated structural wear along these surfaces.

To ensure prolonged operating capacity, the technical scope includes:

  • Pavement structural strengthening and road widening.
  • Application of heavy-duty concrete surfacing.
  • Installation of improved drainage and stormwater control networks.
  • Road safety installations and ancillary transport infrastructure upgrades.

Once delivered, the expanded road network is designed to ease bottlenecks, improve freight turnaround times, and raise operational predictability across terminal gates.

Highlighting the trade mandate of the facility, Mpanza noted: “The rehabilitation of these key roads will improve safety and ensure that the Port of Richards Bay continues to meet the needs of all port users while supporting future growth and investment.”

Mpanza added that the construction push “reinforces Port of Richards Bay’s role as a strategic gateway for South African trade”.

Delivery timelines and job creation

The 18-month engineering programme formally commenced on-site in October 2026.

During the construction cycle, the roadworks are projected to generate approximately 72 employment positions, supporting local procurement, technical skills transfer, and contractor participation in surrounding community nodes.

The project is said to form part of TNPA’s capital spend to improve the competitiveness and operational reliability of South Africa’s commercial seaports.
